Repugnus said Here are my notes from today's IDW panel at Botcon. I tried to be as accurate as possible, but since I was writing as fast as I could, it's possible there may be one or two errors, and so if there are, I apologize in advance. In attendance at the panel were: Marcelo Matere, Jim Sorenson, Denton Tipton, Simon Furman, Alex Milne, Chris Mowry, and Marty Isenberg. The panel was supposed to start with a slideshow presentation, but they had technical difficulties, so they went right into a Q&A session, which is summarized below. Question about whether fans should petition IDW to "revert Arcee." Simon answered, saying that IDW is kind of tampering with preconceptions, and so it's interesting to get a vibe from the fans about how well it goes over. He asked the crowd how well they liked his handling of Arcee, which was met by a fair amount of applause, along with a small handful of negative reactions. He went on to say that gender among TF's always seemed like such a non-issue to him, and so this was his chance to make it a non-issue. Also, he feels that gender was handled very well in Beast Wars and Beast Machines. Follow up quesion about the fem-bots in Megatron: Origin. Alex responded that, when he was doing the book, he had no knowledge of what Simon was going to do. He was asked to do large crowd scenes with characters one might expect to see, and so he included some fem-bots. Simon then added that we should consider the fact that Arcee was probably around back then during Megatron: Origin. Next, a rather confused question about a Beast Machines sequel called "Beast Machines Returns," where the characters returned to Earth. It was concluded that the fan was confused by the Japanese toyline, "Beast Wars Returns." Question about whether AHM will split off the IDW books into two branches, with Shane handling the 'Cons on Earth, and Simon on the Autobots in space. Denton responded that they are simply doing two storylines going in the same continuity, and they don't plan on dividing up into Earth based and Space based branches. Question about whether AHM will have lasting effects on the IDW universe. Denton responded that AHM is setting the new status quo. There will be big ramifications that won't simply be swept under. Two part question, asking if we will soon see either Punch/Counterpunch or Powermasters. Denton responded that they don't have plans to get to the other "masters." With AHM, they're trying to make a book that is accessible, and they might get too continuity heavy with all the various masters, so the Headmasters and combiners are "it-ish" for now as far as that goes. They want to build slowly. Also, no current plans for Punch/Counterpunch, though he did take a moment to plug Spotlight: Doubledealer as a sequel to Spotlight: Hot Rod, which will deal with the Magnificence sub-plot. Question about when we will find out more about the Dead Universe. Simon said the slow build is over. The Revelation quartet will tie up the Dead Universe storyline relatively neatly. Multi-part question about whether we will see more original 'Cons (I'm not quite sure what he meant by that), Predaking with organic parts, or God Neptune. Denton responded that there are currently no plans for them. Question about when we will see "The 13." Denton said not this year, but probably in '09 to go with the big 25th anniversary. Question about what happens to the Autobots on Earth (Hot Rod, Grimlock, Hunter/Sunstreaker, etc.) during the one year gap between Devestation and AHM. Denton responded that by AHM, there won't be any Autobots on Earth at all. Question concerning the recent errors in spelling, speech bubbles, etc. Denton responded that he's looking to take care of that, and that recent factors like switching editors and the production schedule contributed to them. Question about whether there will be a TPB of TF Club comics. Denton said, no, he doesn't think so. Question about more "Evolution" series. Denton said they don't have any scheduled. Question about the possibility of RiD comics. Denton said there's always a chance, but nothing on the horizon. He is however discussing more BW comics, but it's all preliminary, so we'll just have to wait and see. Question about seeing Star Saber in the IDW universe. Simon said he wouldn't rule it out. There's been talk of him, especially with the new "13" series, so it's possible. Jim also added that the new "Ark 2" book will have four pages dedicated to Star Saber, Victory Leo, etc. Question for Simon about how he started with TF's. He responded that in '85, while he was working for Marvel UK, when he was assigned to write Transformers, it came up as something fun to do, and it somehow became a career. Question about whether there are plans to do anything with the UK material that Titan is doing. Simon said that IDW will reprint them, two stories per issue, including "Twighlight's Last Gleaming," which gives an alternate take on the end of the movie that favors the Decepticons, and which will roll over into the second year of the UK's new movie universe. Question about whether AHM will tie up some of the current storyline's loose ends. Denton responded that AHM is doing its own thing. Simon then asked the crowd if they want to know what his new series after Revelation will be. He mentioned that he's been teasing the word, "Maximum" online, and there have been a lot of guesses as to what that means, but it's much more straightforward than a lot of people are guessing. It's going to be Maximum Dinobots! He said it will spin out of Spotlight: Grimlock, and also feature Sunstreaker, along with one other spotlight character. He then added that it will include "enormous battles." Follow up question about the release date of Maximum Dinobots. Denton said, toward the end of the year, maybe in October. Question about whether the new "Ark 2" book will include rare material from commercials. Jim responded that the scope of the book is on the Japanese series: Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, Zone, and a little beyond Zone. It will also include a lot of bizarre, non-toy characters, and he then rattled off a list of names I'm not familiar with, including Clipper and Jack. Question about whether there will be a second IDW Hardcover released. Denton responded that it's not on the publication schedule, but they are planning on it. Question from an elementary school teacher whose students are starting to get into TF's and want to know if they'll see spotlights from characters like Windcharger or Gears. Denton said there are no plans, but anything is possible. Question about whether Galvatron is a zombie. Simon said he is an undead TF, and that in Revelation we will meet the other undead TF's. The group includes Galvatron, Nemesis Prime, Jhiaxus, Cyclonus, and two more characters. The next questioner stated that he's been seeing a theme of Justice & Revenge in many of the spotlights, and asked how Simon chose that "obsession." Simon responded that he never saw it that way. He's not trying to take a moral standpoint, but rather explore character motivations, though after the last three spotlights, he has noticed a common thread. As far as these things being an obsession goes, we can plan to see to what extent nothing else matters for Arcee in Revelation, and that it will have what he feels is an amusing solution. Next questioner said that the different names for the mini-series mess up his hold as his local comic shop, and asked why they need to do that. Simon responded that it keeps the arcs distinct, and that high issue numbers can put off new readers. By starting new arcs, they're "refreshing the pot." Question about how much leeway artists get from IDW on designing characters. Marcelo responded that it depends on the character. For Spotlight: Grimlock, the character's design had already been established in Spotlight: Shockwave, although IDW does give the freedom to change things. For Spotlight: Soundwave, since it was set in the 80's, he felt he should keep his G1 look, though he doesn't know how he will look in AHM. Alex added that for Spotlight Arcee, he tried to have characters match how they look in other spotlights, but he was still able to put on his own details. For Fort Max and Arcee, he conversed with Simon about how they should look, and that the colors they can use has to do with Hasbro. Question on whether we will see more stories on Cybertron's past. Simon said it certainly will be explored, but they are focused on going onward, and not being mired in the past, so they won't likely do more stories like War Within. At this point Marty interjected that there will be a new TF: Animated five issue mini-series coming out in August. A fan then asked if it will it will branch off into it's own continuity separate from the TV show. Marty responded that most comics like this that based on series geared to young audiences involve generic stories that don't interfere with continuity of the show upon which it's based, but since he's writing the show, he doesn't have to do that. The first issue will retell the hour and a half movie at the beginning of TF:A, but from different perspectives (like the Decepticons), and the other issues will feature new stories set in the TV show's continuity. Question about whether artwork from IDW's comics will be made into posters, and if fans could maybe vote on what posters they'd like to see. Denton responded that there's been talk about that, and he suggested going to the IDW forums and starting a thread where folks can vote on what posters they'd like to see. Question about who will be drawing the TF: Animated comic. Denton responded that it will be a Brazillian artist named Dario Brizuela, who has worked on projects for Johnny DC and Marvel Adventures. Question about whether IDW will have the rights to use The Fallen in the "13" series. Simon responded that all the characters are Hasbro's, and IDW isn't beholded to not use certain characters because of Dreamwave. Question about how Simon picked his favorite characters. Simon responded that sometimes there's something in the characters. For example, he loves Private Eye fiction, so he liked Nightbeat. And when there's nothing to the characters, he enjoys sculpting them from the ground up. With IDW, it's refreshing because he gets to take elements from characters and apply different spins/directions. The exception is Galvatron, who was an entirely different character. Question about how IDW has had to expunge Circuit Breaker from their reprinted Marvel stuff. The questioner noted that less stuff was taken out in the UK, and wondered how they would get around her in future stories. Denton said they have a different agreement in the UK, and for the second volume of reprints, they will continue to get around Circuit Breaker by explaining/summarizing things with blocks of text and panels. Question about who everyone's favorite obscure character is in the IDW books. Alex said he liked putting Scrounge in Megatron: Origin, and Jim said he likes Reflector, who will show up in Spotlight: Wheelie. Final question: Will we see Pat Lee on any IDW books? Denton: "No!" Simon: "Over my dead body!" The audience then laughed, although the questioner (who was sitting relatively near me) seemed genuinely confused about the Pat Lee hate. I'm told he went up to the IDW folks afterward and asked what they had against Pat Lee. Wow. Just, wow. They eventually got the slide show working, and zipped through the slides to finish off the panel. Here are some pics I took of most of the slides they showed. Click the thumbnails for larger versions of the pics. (NOTE: THEY ANNOUNCED THAT PHOTOGRAPHY WAS ALLOWED, SO I'M ASSUMING IT'S OKAY TO POST THESE PICS, BUT IF ANYONE AT IDW WANTS ME TO TAKE THEM DOWN, I HAVE NO PROBLEM DOING THAT) Y como diría Decep... |
